In September of 2001, the State of South Dakota dedicated a memorial to honor the many South Dakota veterans that served in World War II. The dedication ceremony was held in Pierre, SD near the Capitol Complex at the edge of Capitol Lake culminating with the dedication of a 6 statue bronze memorial. The memorial is the creation of artists Lee Leuning and Sherri Treeby which depicts 6 soldiers from each branch of military service. They are set out over Capitol Lake and face a column of flags for each branch of the military along with a larger American Flag behind the flaming fountain. They offer a salute to the American Flag out of respect and love for their country and fallen comrades who helped keep this country free.
