The Fighting Stallions memorial was constructed by the people of South Dakota to memorialize the 8 South Dakotans that perished in a plane crash in April 1993. Then Governor Mickelson was one of those that was killed in this crash. The memorial was modeled after a wooden 1935 carving by South Dakota sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and symbolizes South Dakota's struggle to overcome adversity, desire for achievement and belief in the future.
