The blinds are put up by the folks of the Fort Pierre Ranger District and they graciously allow you to reserve these blinds for free to allow you to view wildlife.

The blind was put in a location where the Greater Prairie-Chicken and Sharp-tail Grouse were found and at this time of the year is their mating season. These birds have a very unique mating ritual. The males put on displays by 'puffing' up their necks and fluffing their feathers. They also challenge each other with displays and even short fights can occur.

They call it "The Dance of The Prairie Chicken"! And it is quite a site to see and hear. The winds were quite strong on the morning I was there, which cut down on several displays, but there was still a lot of activity and noise. I was surprised at all the 'chattering' and 'whooping' they did. It quite literally sounded like you were in a jungle surrounded by monkeys!

This gallery contains a variety of the photos I took. I had to crop many of these photos quite a bit since the birds stayed a distance from the blind and my camera lens wasn't quite long enough to bring them in really close.

Hunters from all over the country come to South Dakota each fall to hunt this colorful bird. It is a hard bird to get close to though with a camera as they generally fly away quickly. However, some times when it's very cold they are not so quick to run away or you just get lucky. Here a few photos of this bird.

We were only able to attend one day, but there is so much more to see and do than we were able to.

In between family activities, I managed to sneak away and get some photos of the different activities and sights that were available. I wished I had much more time (and energy!) to see more, because there are so many interesting photographic opportunities to be found during the fair and I only managed to capture a very small slice of these. I hope you enjoy these photos!

In the park is a large herd of buffalo. These animals are quite impressive. We managed to find the main herd one evening and I took several photos of them, including one massive buffalo among them. A guide that worked there said they let 4-5 buffalo's live out their life instead of selling them during the round up and I was fortunate that one walked right by me considering the herd is about 1,500 buffalo in size. Ever since then, I told myself I would get more photos of buffalo and I have. I was able to attend the 2010 Buffalo Roundup in the Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

I realize these are not technically 'buffalo' and are actually bison, but everyone knows these animals by the name of buffalo. I found out quickly that the buffalo is a hard animal to photograph with the dark hide and dark eyes, but when you can capture them, they truly are a majestic animal! I hope to get more photos of buffalo in the future so I can add to this collection.

There were over 1,100 groups organized around the world with over 33,000 people registered to walk.

The walk I attended was lead by SD Tourism Senior Photographer Chad Coppess and was held in Pierre, SD at the State Capitol and surrounding area and lasted for 2 hours. This gallery contains a variety of photos I took during this walk. When you are near the Capitol Building, it dominates your thoughts for taking photos of it. I have several already and took some more, but I wanted to capture some images that you might not take special notice of if you walk by them on a daily basis like I do.

The Patriot Flag has been on tour in all 50 states, and farther as part of a Remembrance Tour to remind everyone of the brave men and women that perished in the terrorist attacks. The ceremony in Pierre, SD was the final stop before the flag heads back to New York in preparation for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

This gallery contains numerous photographs taken during this ceremony. It was a windy, but beautiful day to hold this ceremony. Among the speakers were Fort Pierre mayor Sam Tidball, Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill, and keynote speaker Joe Torrillo who is one of the few fireman who survived the collapse of the twin towers. It was an inspiring event and I would encourage everyone to take a moment and remember this fateful day, remember those that perished in the planes and buildings, but also remember the brave emergency responders that ran into the burning towers to save as many lives as they could, with no regard for their own lives.

This isn't something I've ever photographed or even watched before, so when Chad announced this photo walk, I was excited to attend.

The event at the Oahe Speedway on this day was the Coca Cola Points Race w/National Dragster Challenge/Junior Jam.

I was surprised by how many racers and families were involved with this racing, along with the number of young racers there. When I arrived at the speedway, I saw dozens of campers, rv's, and tents the racers, family members, and others had stayed over night in. It was obvious that these people were passionate about their racing and I really enjoyed the event. I was somewhat surprised by the lack of spectators for this event as I'm sure many folks would have enjoyed watching it.

This gallery contains many photos I managed to take. I found photographing this type of event would take a lot of practice and multiple visits as many of my photographs did not turn out well, but I enjoyed it none the less and the photo walk was certainly a success!

If racers or family members of racers would like a copy of any of these photos, just drop me a note and let me know which photo(s) and I can send them to you.

On August 7, 2010, South Dakota Dept. of Tourism Senior Photographer Chad Coppess held a photowalk at the Ingalls Homestead. This was the perfect incentive to go. My wife and daughters were able to see and do many activities while I was able to enjoy my photography hobby and photograph many interesting things. I've since revisted the Homestead and have added a few more photos to this gallery. The Ingalls Homestead is a great place to visit and gives you some sense of what it was like to live on the prairie.

The theme for the pageant this year was "By the Shores of Silver Lake". This year marks the 40th anniversary of this pageant and the first year we have ever attended. If you attend one of these pageants in the future, you'll find a friendly staff, who all volunteer, and I'm sure you will enjoy your time. We had attended the Ingalls Homestead last year for a visit and really enjoyed it, so this year we decided we needed to make a special trip to see the pageant. It was a perfect evening for the pageant, with wonderful weather on the plains with a beautiful sunset. We enjoyed the show very much and you can tell the performers enjoy being part of it. This gallery contains a variety of photographs I took during the pageant. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as we enjoyed attending.

It's not a particularly large or extraordinary fireworks display as far as those go, but we all enjoy it very much anyway. One of the challenges is to find an interesting way to photograph them, which I have not been very succesful with yet. However, one of the "can't miss" spots to photograph the fireworks is north of the South Dakota State Capitol building and shoot the fireworks as they go off in the background. This gallery is a collection of some of the photos I took on July 4th, 2011.

The architectural plans from the Montana State Capitol were adopted as the base plan for the design with some modifications made. The cornerstone was laid in June of 1908. Construction was completed on June 25, 1910 with the formal dedication occuring on June 30, 1910. An additional annex was added to the north side of the original structure in 1932 to add needed additional office space. On the east grounds of the Capitol was a deep draw that contained mostly eroded gumbo soil and weeds. This 5 acre area was an eyesore and in 1913 a project was completed that turned this area into the modern day "Capitol Lake" that includes an artesian well dug to feed into the lake and a dam along one side of the lake. Originally a manmade island was part of the lake, but this was later turned into a peninsula. In 1914 an extensive landscaping project was began to plant trees and shrubs, many of which still reside in the present day grounds around the Capitol.

My family and I were able to attend and it was a beautiful day.

The theme for the air show was 100 years of aviation and they had a variety of aircraft on static display and flying. It was great to see all these aircraft, some of which are very rare to see in flight today. It was a wonderful show, and although I don't feel I captured the best images possible, I hope you enjoy them none the less!
